Looks Can Be Deceiving

Okay, is everyone ready for another bizarre story? I realize most of these stories, like most things in my life, will be thought of as odd. Well, working at an apartment complex is truly an odd job. There are so many things that we find out because we are dealing with people’s lives, their homes, and every aspect of it. Sure, there are residents that I could only tell you the basics, like whether they are students or professionals, whether they have kids or their significant others living with them, or if they just live by themselves. I can pick out the partiers from the non-partiers. However, when I find out something completely off the wall about them, they truly stand out in my mind.

This situation happened a few years ago, when I had recently become the Leasing Manager. There was a woman, she was very sweet, had a three year old son, and enjoyed hanging out at the pool with him. She had even taken a ten year old boy under her wing. This young boy was always left alone by his mother since she worked all the time, so this lady volunteered to babysit him for free after school since she was just hanging out with her son anyway. She actually lived in the building next to me, and everything was going well… until the day she decided to renew her lease.

She signed her new lease agreement one day, and then a few hours later came into the office to see if she could get a letter written from me saying how much her rent is each month in order to show it to the daycare her son would be starting soon. The problem with this was, she gave me a different name. I noticed the difference and she admitted that the girl that had applied for the apartment over the internet had to move into a halfway house before her lease started, so they had an agreement that she would just move in for her, with the lease still in her name so she didn’t have to pay extra to re-lease the apartment to her. I informed her that this was against our rules and that she would need to apply to be on a lease by herself. She completed the application, and what I found out horrified me.

While I won’t go into specifics on what the background check pulled up, I will say that I believed she was supposed to notify the public of her address because she had been convicted of sex offenses. I quickly notified my property manager of the situation and her response was that she needed to move out within twenty four hours. I pleaded that we notify the police since she had committed forgery and just in case she was back to her old ways, in terms of the crimes she had committed. My boss decided it was best for everyone if she were to just leave quietly.

To this day, I still wonder what became of this resident. I wonder if she had, in fact, committed more crimes while living there. I sometimes feel guilty because if she did harm anyone, maybe it could have been prevented if we had just checked her ID on the day she moved in. I guess it was just a lesson that I need to be more suspicious of people and that not everyone is as good as they claim to be. So everyone, don’t judge a book by its cover. Oh yeah, I’ll leave it like I left the last blog. Be nice to your landlords, you never know what is on their minds and what they are dealing with “behind the scenes.”

  1. What? That is crazy! If I were in your position I don't know if I could have just not contacted the police. I know your boss said not to, but that's just creepy and like you said I would have felt guilty about it afterward. I think it's pretty funny though that you can pick out the party people and the non-party people--I think you need to meet my future roommates and let me know what they are going to be like. Apparently, I don't do a good job of figuring that out on my own.

  2. That is a crazy story. I probably would have called the police because the woman was watching another woman's son, and if she was a previous sex offender, you never know what she could have been doing! Your story made me wonder what my landlords think about me. I'm pretty annoying in that I call maintenance like ALL the time for really strange things. Just the other day, I was walking to my apartment and as I walked past my porch, I saw like an entire head's worth of hair on the grass right in front of my porch fence, it was pretty disgusting. I didn't want to touch it or clean it myself, so I called maintenance and asked if they could do something about it- but how weird is that? Have you ever had a resident call and ask for you (or your maintenance providers) to remove large amounts of hair from the area surrounding their apartments?

  3. This is definitely an interesting story. Criminals are often good at disgusing themselves to appear like genuine people. However I do not think you should beat yourself up for something that did no get done. Count this as a lesson and move on. We definitely cannot judge people based off of how they appear. We do not know what lies beneath.

  4. What freaks me out about this story is that this woman was babysitting a child for someone else! Where was the mother of the older boy when she asked this woman to watch her child?! That really scares me but there are parents out there that do not watch their children or make sure they are in good hands.
I cannot believe that the office manager didn’t want you to go to the police since she had forged the lease signature. Not much of a winner or a turnaround if her friend she got the apartment from went into a halfway house. Basically Apartment complex’s really need to make sure they are checking up on people that sign leases and even send someone around every now and then to check up to make sure no one is doing anything really illegal, or should be paying for.
In this town we have college students that are living here away from their families and do not know much about the real world yet. Also, I know that it is mean to think it, but I find it unfair that I go the legal way and pay for my dog but there are other people that will hide it from the complex and actually get away with it!
Although it is a crazy story, I think you did the right thing!

  5. Wow, that's scary for so many reasons especially the part about how she was babysitting someone elses kid! What name was she using for him? It is so true, you really cannot judge anyone by what you see. Criminals are amazing at creating multiple worlds for themselves so they can be anyone they want and never get introuble.
Also interesting you can pick out party people, i always thought i could but i continue to be surprised daily by "unexpected" peoples actions.
ggod luck, sounds like an interesting job

  6. That is a crazy story! I am in disbelief over the fact that your boss did not want to inform the police, expecially since she had been babysitting someone else's child. I am, however, relieved to find out that apartment complexs really perform background checks. It's nice to know that they don't just claim they do. I'm glad to see that she was evicted.

  7. Haha, I love reading your blog. Not because that was funny, that really is awful I hope that little boy is ok but because, for my last post I almost wrote about the craziness with my neighbors on Tuesday night. Very long and crazy story maybe I will write about it next week but for the time being I will just ask you a question since you do work at a complex.

I live in a Condo "complex" and well....can you get someone evicted for being CRAZY? It is a valid question I believe. I live in a good neighborhood too, and it really scares the life out of me...let me know if I can fill out an application or something haha!

  8. That is a interesting story, it is really interesting and sometimes scary when you take a peek into stranger's lives. I worry about what could have been going on, there are still a lot of unknowns in that whole situations but you definitely did the right thing. Things could have gone a lot worse, lucky you were as observant as you were. Keep up the good work.

  9. Your Post get me every week! Leaving my mind saying hmmmm. I think your boss has some ethical issues and keeping things quiet/not doing the right thing is not the way to run any business -it will invite more problems.

I wonder what you would say about me...judging a book by its cover. I am looked at a number of ways by people who do not really know me, but I almost always act the same.

  10. my dad has owned apartments and rentals for 50+ years (he started when he was a teenager!), and I have heard more than I'd ever want to - and I can only imagine what he knows!!
